Heading off to university can be a daunting and mind-altering experience. Everything is all so new, and you are so far from home in a place where – more often than not – you have no idea where to start.
Without parents and long-term pals to pull you through your first taste of real adult life, it can be difficult to know where to turn. Figuring it out starts with exploring and understanding the city, continues with taking the pressure off, and ends with looking after yourself (and unfortunately, your bank account) is the key.
I just started my fourth year of studying in Manchester and I can honestly say they have been the best years of my life, but here are 13 things that would have been hugely helpful if I knew them before I started.

9. Libraries
Being home to a vast collection of universities, Manchester knows how to support its students, so libraries and studying opportunities are sprinkled around the city. Central library is wonderful, but it gets very busy very quickly, especially in exam season. Instead, try the City library or Withington library, or opt for another on Manchester’s extensive list. | Google

10. Don’t get stuck in what you’re used to
Manchester has so much to offer when it comes to independent and sustainable venues and shops, so make the most of it and go to places you couldn’t find at home. Switch out your morning Starbucks for Takk in the Northern Quarter, or those Turtle Bay drinks for Lost Cat’s chilled out twist on a classic cocktail bar. | Google Maps

11. It is ok to ask – actually it is essential
It can be intimidating to ask for help, and university is one of those environments where you feel like you should know the ins and outs of everything but in reality, nobody does. You are there to learn and so are your peers and chances are, you will not be the only one who needs the answer. People are there to help you, so let them! | Unsplash

12. Your flatmates aren’t the be all and end all
Don’t get me wrong, you might have found your best friends for life in your flatmates, but you will have so many opportunities to meet other people throughout your years here. You will meet people out and about, at work, on your course, and here in Manchester there is so much to do, you never know when you might meet your next best friend. | Unsplash
