There are plenty of people who would agree with the sentiments of the old song and say: ‘Oh I do like to be beside the seaside’ - and fortunately there are a number of options for those who fancy a day on the coast without having to travel too far from Manchester.
There’s a huge choice of different places to visit along the North West’s coastline, from genteel and quiet Victorian resorts to boisterous seaside party towns bursting with activities and things to do. There are also long stretches of lonely coastline for those who enjoy seeing nature and getting off the beaten track.
Here are eight suggestions for where you can head for the sea front.

1. Southport
Southport makes an ideal destination for a family day out and can be reached by either car or train from Manchester. The many things to do include strolling down the pier, enjoying some typical seaside amusements and rides, looking round the gardens and trying your hand at mini golf. 2. Formby
Formby is something of a coastal haven for wildlife where you can explore the dunes and woodlands which are home to rare creatures such as the natterjack toast or simply enjoy a walk along the sand. Photo: AdobeStock Photo: AdobeStock

3. Crosby
Crosby is best known for Antony Gormley’s stunning public art work Another Place which consists of dozens of mysterious iron figures staring out to sea, but is also a good choice for a day at the beach. Photo: Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

4. Blackpool
The biggest and liveliest resort on the Lancashire coastline, Blackpool is packed with things to do for families. Pluck up your courage to ride the rollercoasters at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, go for a walk along the piers, visit Madame Tussauds, go to the world-famous Tower....the choices are almost endless.
