The study by Erobella analysed cities around the globe and ranked them based on factors including the number of gay bars, the frequency of LGBTQ+ events, access to contraception, transgender rights, the legality of sex work, and laws protecting against homophobic and transphobic behaviour.
Amsterdam came out on top, scoring highly across nearly all categories, from legal protections and inclusivity to the availability of sexual health resources and the visibility of queer culture.
Several UK cities also ranked within the global top 20, with Manchester in 7th place and taking 1st place for UK city in sexual liberalism. Known for its iconic Gay Village around Canal Street, the city has long been a hub for LGBTQIA+ culture and activism.

Brenda Jensen, Head of Data & Research at Erobella said: “Sexual freedom is a benchmark for social openness.”
Adding: “With the Sexually Liberal City Index, we wanted to go beyond surface level assumptions and create a data driven picture of where people can truly be themselves. Whether you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community, sex-positive, or simply value the freedom to express yourself without fear, this index highlights cities that don’t just tolerate sexual and gender diversity, they actively celebrate it.”
