Anita Street in Ancoats is much-loved by influencers and film crews for its historic Victorian terraces, which stand in contrast to the modern developments that have sprung up around it over the decades. 

There’s a well-known story behind the name Anita Street. When the houses were built in the late 19th century, the street was named Sanitary Street due to the fact it was one of the first social housing projects where all the properties had running water and their own toilets. Most of the houses in Ancoats at the time were slums, with thousands living in cramped conditions with shared, unsanitary facilities.

In the 1980s, residents started to complain about the unusual street name, so it was changed – simply by removing a few letters.
