Ancoats favourite Hip Hop Chip Shop, recently named second best chippy in the UK, has opened a new city centre location inside one of Manchester’s top music venues.

New Century Hall welcomed the music-themed fish and chip shop to its premises on Friday 10 November, adding to the varied list of vendors already located at the venue, including Wild by Ply (pizza), steak and burger specialists Tallow, Gujarati street food by Spice Yard, Bahn Vi pan-Asian food and Koi Sushi.

This will be Hip Hop Chip Shop’s third location. Having started out as a pop-up, they now have a restaurant on Blossom Street in Ancoats opened in 2018, where they regularly host music events, and a unit at the Etihad Stadium, where they cater for the visiting sports and music fans.

What to expect from Hip Hop Chip Shop?

Hip Hop Chip Shop offer their own take on the classic chippy tea. Their trademark dish is “Feasty Boys,” which includes battered fresh fish biters, chunky skin-on-chips and minty mushy peas, but they also offer vegan options, vegetarian battered halloumi, as well as traditional options like sausages, pies, gravy and curry sauce.

All the food is cooked from scratch and fresh to order. All the fish is sourced from Fraserburgh Port, Aberdeenshire and Hip Hop Chip Shop aims to have it on customers’ plates within 24-36 hours of being caught.

When we visited earlier this summer, we were also particularly impressed by the masala battered fish and battered gherkins. The sides menu includes other twists on chip shop staples, such as Sriracha pickled egg and mushy pea fritters.

With the festive season almost upon us, diners can also look forward to the Hip Hop Chip Shop Christmas menu, such as cauliflower mac n cheese balls and curry batter sprouts.

Managing Director, Jonathan “Ozzie” Oswald, commented: “We’re buzzing to be opening our third Manchester location in New Century’s kitchens on 10th November, and to join all of the other traders knockin' out some top quality food.

“It’s an honour to be part of this iconic venue steeped in cultural history which aligns with our love for music. We can’t wait to cook some hearty meals for anyone who comes to pay us a visit. Catch you all soon!”

What is New Century Hall?

New Century Hall is located a short walk away from Victoria Station, on Hanover Street in the Green Quarter. It was originally built in the 1960s, hosting acts like Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, and later acid-house parties from local legends like 808 State and a Guy Called Gerald.

From the early 2000s onwards, the venue only hosted a handful of gigs, but it was reopened in a big way a couple of years ago and now continues to welcome guests to its sprung dance floor to enjoy a healthy mix of both indie and mainstream acts. The venue’s rebirth also included a brand new food hall, which is now home to several food traders. As well as music, it hosts a wide range of events for both adults and families.
