It’s English Tourism Week 2023 and you don’t have to go far to visit some lovely spots in Greater Manchester and just beyond.
We’re so lucky in Greater Manchester to have so many pretty and historic villages and small towns within easy reach.
You don’t have to travel far out of the hustle and bustle of the city of Manchester to reach stunning countryside, independent high street shops, and lovely walks - some with a good pub and roast dinner at the end. There are also some real hidden gem villages in the area you might not know about.
In celebration of English Tourism Week 2023, we’ve chosen seven lovely spots to explore which are all in Greater Manchester or less than an hour’s drive away.

5. Rivington
Here you can take a hike up Rivington Pike - one of the north of England’s best viewpoints. The historic tower dates back tp the 12th century and you’ll get some great views for miles, well worth a walk.

6. Glossop
Just outside Greater Manchester lies the popular spot of Glossop, with some good pubs, a nice kids’ playpark along the river, and these rolling hills above it plus the start of the wonderful Snake Pass hilly drive. Old Glossop dates back to the 12th century.

7. Wrightington
This little parish straddles the Lancashire/ Greater Manchester border near Parbold and features three good country pubs for a slap up meal - including the White Lion (pictured) which does a great Sunday roast and kids’ menu Photo: Nick Fairhurst
