English Tourism Week: 7 lovely villages & small towns to visit near Manchester including Disley and Glossop
It’s English Tourism Week 2023 and you don’t have to go far to visit some lovely spots in Greater Manchester and just beyond.
We’re so lucky in Greater Manchester to have so many pretty and historic villages and small towns within easy reach.
You don’t have to travel far out of the hustle and bustle of the city of Manchester to reach stunning countryside, independent high street shops, and lovely walks - some with a good pub and roast dinner at the end. There are also some real hidden gem villages in the area you might not know about.
In celebration of English Tourism Week 2023, we’ve chosen seven lovely spots to explore which are all in Greater Manchester or less than an hour’s drive away.
1. Disley
Disley in Cheshire is home to the magnificient Lyme, a National Trust sute surrounded by gardens, moorland and a deer park. It’s just six miles form Stockport and well worth the trip. Credit: Philip - stock.adobe.com
2. Greenfield
Greenfield near Saddleworth is home to four reservoirs, on the edge of the Peak District national park. You’ll get some lovely views of the nearby valleys if you climb the hills. Credit: Steve - stock.adobe.com
3. Appley Bridge
This sweet village near Wigan is home to pretty Fairy Glen which provides a highlight of a scenic woodland walk. Photo: Michelle Adamson
4. Whalley
This gorgeous Lancashire village is about 50 minutes from Manchester in the car, and it is home to a historic abbey set in beautiful grounds. There is also a lovely high street with nice independent shops and eateries. Photo: UGC
