When you think about it, a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament in the 17th century is a very strange thing to celebrate every year. But seeing as it’s one of the rare occasions we get to enjoy fireworks, it’s a tradition we happily get involved in.

The council-run firework events, including the big one at Heaton Park, were cancelled last year for financial reasons, and it’s unlikely they will be making a comeback this year.

But there will be plenty of community events to get involved in, and you can also buy your own fireworks to enjoy responsibly at home.

What are the rules?

If you are planning on buying some fireworks, there are laws and rules you need to be aware of. According to the UK government website, fireworks, including sparklers, can only be purchased from licensed sellers for private use on certain days of the year to coincide with certain celebrations.

These dates are:

  • 15 October to 10 November
  • 26 to 31 December
  • 3 days before Diwali and Chinese New Year
You can buy fireworks from 15 October. You can buy fireworks from 15 October.

Local councils will have further guidelines for firework and bonfire safety. Manchester city council’s guidelines can be found on its website.
