Waking up in the dark, going home in the dark and spending all day sat at your desk can often leave you craving the outdoors and fresh air when you have some free daylight hours during the weekend.
Luckily, there are loads of villages, nature parks and attractions that are within easy day trip distance of Manchester.
Here are some of our favourites.
1. Delamere Forest
Located less than an hour’s drive away from Manchester, Delamere in Cheshire is the perfect woodland getaway if you want to stretch your legs and take in some scenery. There are several car parks and a large visitors’ centre, which sells hot and cold food. All the trails and paths are well-maintained, making it popular with walkers of all abilities and cyclists. Dogs are also welcome. Delamere forest is teeming with wildlife and this time of year it’s great for mushroom and fungi spotting (just don’t pick anything!). If you need something extra to keep the little ones entertained then the Gruffalo sculpture trail is something to look out for. (Photo credit PAUL ELLIS/AFP via Getty Images) Photo: PAUL ELLIS
2. Jodrell Bank
One of just 35 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the UK, Jodrell Bank, home of the Lovell Telescope, is a must-see for both adults and kids with a fascination in the stars. Visitors can explore the Discovery Centre, where interactive exhibits bring the wonders of the universe to life, from black holes to distant galaxies. There are daily telescope talks, shows, film screenings as well as the Space Pavilion and Planet Pavilion Café. It’s set against the backdrop of the Cheshire countryside and playground, so even a walk around the gardens is pleasant. (Photo: Getty Images) | Getty Images
3. Hebden Bridge
This Calder Valley village in West Yorkshire is known for its vintage shops and alternative vibe. There are so many great pubs and restaurants, including the famous Trades Club, which is also a popular music venue. If it’s nature you’re after, then a visit to Hardcastle Crag is a must. The National Trust site has several different walking routes for all abilities. (Photo by Christopher Furlong/Getty Images) | Getty Images Photo: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images
4. Formby Beach
The beach may not be an obvious choice for an autumn day out, but there’s nothing better to blow away the cobwebs than fresh sea air. Formby is less than an hour’s drive away from Manchester and parking is free for National Trust members. You can wander along the sea front and through the forests, grabbing a cup of tea along the way. While you’re in the area, you might as well check out the Another Place statues at Crosby Beach by artist Anthony Gormley. (Photo: David Dixon) | David Dixon
