The Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke has sadly died at the age of 59. The musician played a huge part in some of the Manchester band’s most iconic songs. 

Rourke has died following a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Figures from the world of music have paid tribute on social media.

The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr shared the news of his former bandmates death. He tweeted to say: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Rourke after a lengthy illness with pancreatic cancer. 

“Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans. We request privacy at this sad time.” 

The Charlatans singer Tim Burgess added: "Such sad sad news about Andy Rourke - he was an inspirational musician with a style that made so many of us pick up a bass guitar; and the driving force for [benefit concert] Manchester Versus Cancer. Our thoughts are with everyone who knew him. Travel well x."

Ian Brown, former frontman of Manchester band The Stone Roses, has also paid tribute to Mr Rourke. On his Twitter, he wrote: RiP ANDY ROURKE. I first met Andy aged 17 @simonWolstencr1 party.We remained pals. One of the highlights of my music life was Andy playing on my The World is Yours album and accompanying me onstage on a UK tour and my first show in MOSCOW. Belly laughs all the way. RiP Brother X."

Mr Rourke was a major part of The Smiths and his music featured on ‘There Is a Light That Never Goes Out’ and ‘This Charming Man’. he also performed on all four of The Smiths studio albums; 1984's The Smiths, 1985's Meat Is Murder, 1986's The Queen Is Dead and 1987's Strangeways, Here We Come.
