The streets of Greater Manchester are named after sorts of things – from notable residents to local landmarks. Some are named after animals (Lizard Street, Parrot Street), or far-off places (China Lane, Portugal Street), or famous faces (Sir Alex Ferguson Way, Alan Turning Way). There are street names that only a local would know how to pronounce ( Hall i’ th’ Wood Street – Boltonians, please explain), and some that just sound cool (Cyclone Street).
Some street names have changed over time – such as Anita Street in Ancoats, which was known as Sanitary Street when it was first built in the early20th century– and there are names which residents today probably wish they could change (Corona Street). There is even one famously nameless street in Levenshulme that has become a minor tourist attraction.
Finally, there are some names that never fail to make people smirk as they drive past. Here are some of Greater Manchester’s cheekiest street names.
