Greater Manchester has produced many famous names over the years, and it is also the birthplace of some stars whose links to the area are less well-known.
The city-region has produced many eminent folk who have gone on to play a part in the world of sport, entertainment and much more.
We’ve put together a list of the biggest names from Manchester, some which you may already know have links to the area, and a few surprises.

1. Aitch
British rapper and songwriter Harrison James Armstrong, known professionally as Aitch, has clocked up millions of streams on his songs and has charted within the UK top 40. He was born in the Moston area of the city and is also an avid supporter of Manchester United.
2. Maxine Peake
The actress was born in Westhoughton in 1974 and has gone on to star in roles on stage, screen and radio. She went to Westhoughton High School and joined Bolton Octago Youth Theatre aged 13. Photo: Getty
3. Ian McShane
The Lovejoy, Deadwood and Pirates of the Caribbean star was born in Blackburn but raised in Davyhulme, Urmston, and attended Stretford Grammar School.
4. Amir Khan
The former boxing world champion was born and raised in Bolton. In 2015, he received an honorary degree from the University of Bolton for his contributions to sport and charity.
