Around 600,000 people are expected to be offered their Covid-19 spring booster jab this week, as infection levels continue to rise.

The latest figures confirm that this is the third week in a row where infections have increased.

Researchers understand that part of the rise could be down to the more contagious BA.2 variant, which has been named ‘Stealth Omicron’, which is now thought to be the most common strain in the UK.

Why are infections rising?

After the past few months, we have seen many rules relaxed in the country, such as the slow decreasing of the number of days needed to self isolate being dramatically reduced.

It is also believed that a change in ‘public behaviour’ towards the virus has also caused a spike in the amount of cases.

The spring booster is a new campaign, with immunity from older vaccination declining, with most people eligible for this one likely having their most recent dose in September and October last year.

An extra dose is recommended to be had six months after your last dose as certain individuals are at a higher risk of contracting severe coronavirus.

These groups are eligible:

  • Adults aged 75 years and over
  • Residents in a care home for older adults
  • People aged 12 years and over who are immuno-suppressed
