"Manchester feels like home" - Freaky Friday stars on UK theatre premiere

Today, we went down to HOME in Manchester to watch the rehearsals of the brand-new Freaky Friday The Musical theatre performance ahead of their UK premiere and had a chat with leads Rebecca Lock (Katherine) and Jen Pandaya (Ellie).

Both Jen and Rebecca have previously performed for Manchester audiences and on the topic of returning Rebecca said: “I’m thrilled, I Iove Manchester so much.”

Jen added: “It’s such a cool city, it’s nice to come back when you’ve been here and it feels like coming home. The audience is so great and there’s such a good theatre scene here so everyone is super invested and up for a good time and knows what it’s like to put on a new musical. It feels like a safe and nice environment to be in.”

Rebecca said: “Audiences here are so fun and up for a laugh, so I hope they laugh at us.”

On the question of what drew them both to their roles of Katherine and Ellie, Jen said: “For me it’s probably from watching the films. It’s such an iconic character especially with the two of them together and it’s just so fun.”

Rebecca said: “When do you ever get to play a 16-year-old trapped inside your body? I get to be silly, be stupid and I’m having a lovely time.”

The show is centred around a magical mother and daughter body swap which creates chaos in each other’s lives.

When asked who they would each be if they could body swap for a day, Jen said: “I would say Brian Cox because I love space and it would be cool to know what he knows, but also God, there’s so many people.”

Rebecca said: “I would like to be Doris Day please, she’s my ultimate favourite.”

Lastly, the pair gave us a heads up of what you can expect from the musical.

Rebecca said: “Joy and belly laughs, the most wonderful music and the most incredible dancing. Its such a good story, we’ve got grandparents in this, we’ve got younger brothers, we’ve got parents, all ages and generations.

Adding: “If you come as a family, you will have the best time.”
