Against the backdrop of the partition of India, two best friends bound by love resist the forces that try to tear them apart.

In 1945, just before the partition of India, two young women - one Sikh, one Muslim—face an uncertain future as religious tensions threaten to separate them. Set against the backdrop of the partition of India, this show provides a fresh perspective on female friendship, coming of age, coming out and identity. Santi & Naz is coming to Octagon Theatre for Saturday 2nd November.

Written by Guleraana Mir and afshan d’souza-lodhi, Santi & Naz premiered at the VAULT Festival in 2020 and later won the Charlie Hartill Fund at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2023. The play is produced by The Thelmas, a female-led touring company known for exploring social and political stories. Santi & Naz was also developed with the input of South Asia historian Eleanor Newbigin from SOAS, University of London.

Writer Guleraana Mir describes the play as both joyous and revealing, shedding light on a pivotal historical moment often overlooked in British narratives. She notes that it’s for “friends, lovers, families, and history buffs,” and especially for those curious about the Partition of India.
