Playground Proms brings classical music to Bolton schoolchildren
Schoolchildren in Bolton are taking their learning outside next week as Playground Proms brings its high-energy, interactive classical music workshops to the town.
The national touring project, created by comedy string quartet Graffiti Classics, arrives at Rivington Foundation Primary School on Thursday 26 June as part of its largest tour to date. Designed to introduce young people to the joy of classical music in a fun and accessible way, Playground Proms transforms playgrounds into open-air concert spaces—complete with live performances, rhythm games, and plenty of laughs.
The initiative began in 2021 as a creative response to Covid-19 restrictions and has since reached nearly 50,000 children across the UK and Ireland. Thanks to new funding from Arts Council England, this year’s tour will run for 32 weeks, covering 15 locations including multiple stops across the North West.
The Bolton workshop will see pupils guided through musical terms, conducting, and composition, all set to a backdrop of well-known classical pieces reimagined with humour and flair. There’s also a chance for the children to perform their own verse of the Playground Proms Anthem, written in the lead-up to the visit.

With its playful take on tradition, Playground Proms is proving that classical music doesn’t belong only in concert halls—but in the heart of school communities like Bolton’s.
