'I know they won't take a bin if there's one wrong thing in them' - Manchester changing bin rules

There have been changes in the way that bin collections are happening. There are going to be fewer collections and much stricter rules on what can and can't be recycled. So, we went out to ask if people are worried about this and if they think that fewer collections will massively impact them.

In Manchester, there are changes to the types of plastics accepted in recycling bins and a move towards smaller general waste bins. Residents in most Greater Manchester boroughs can now recycle plastic pots, tubs, and trays in their mixed recycling bins, along with plastic bottles. Additionally, Manchester is replacing black general waste bins with smaller grey ones.

One person said: “I kind of live alone, so basically it's just two adults in the house most of the time. So, ours aren't usually too bad, but then I can imagine obviously families with kids or with, you know, more than two people in the house, obviously my bin would be full.”

Another said: “We do have recycle and we're pretty keen on recycling at home. We do everything pretty much to the book, but I know sometimes they won't take a bin if there's one wrong thing in, which is a bit over the top. It's kind of putting people off if you’re pulled up and ‘I won’t to take your full bin because of one item’ and instead of just mentioning it. I think that's been a bit ridiculous. It's at least 99% of the stuff that's recycling is better than none at all.”
